The Low-Down on Mozzies
… everything you need to know about those little critters and how to safely use insect repellents …
That is not a paradox – you can use insect repellent safely; especially if it is made with natural ingredients that will not harm you or the environment.
Wynnya has created a powerful and effective, pleasant smelling Mosquito & Insect repellent range that is safe for the whole family.
What do we know about mosquitos, other than that they can leave you with itchy, red welts?
- Only Female Mosquitoes Bite
Not all mosquitoes look upon you as a delicious meal.
While both male and female mosquitoes feed on nectar and plant sap as their nutrition source, only female mosquitoes need blood for egg production.
- Mosquitoes Prefer Darker Colours
Black might be slimming, but if you’re trying to avoid mosquitoes, best to opt for lighter-coloured clothing as they can be attracted to darker colours.
- Mosquitoes Do Prefer to Bite Some People Over Others
If you keep getting bitten while those around you don’t, it may be because the mozzies are attracted to your body chemistry of over others. Chemicals such as carbon dioxide and lactic acid attract mosquitoes.
- Full Moon Makes Mosquitoes More Active
Werewolves, vampires … and mosquitoes? The full moon can be blamed for many strange things both real and imagined. Scientists claim and that a full moon can increase mosquito activity by 500 percent!
- Mosquitoes Need Only One Tablespoon of Water to Breed
Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water or wet earth, and they only require a small bit of water to do so. Some types of mosquitoes only need a tablespoon of water to breed, an amount that can easily collect in holes in trees, saucers underneath pot-plants, even a discarded bottle cap.
Turn those MOsquitoes into NOsquitoes with the Wynnya Insect Repellent range.
The truth about DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide)
What is DEET anyway?
It sounds so cryptic, but DEET is simply the common name for N,N-Diethyl-m-toluamide. It is the most common active ingredient in insect repellents.
It can cause allergic skin reactions and eye irritation. Over exposure to DEET can result in seizures, slurred speech, and unconsciousness; especially where people have ingested DEET or applied it for three or more days in a row, or used products with 95 percent DEET or more. Experts urge infants, children, seniors and those with weakened immunity to use it with extra caution.
MYTH: DEET kills mosquitoes.
FACT: DEET does not kill mosquitoes—it deters and repels them.
DEET interferes with neurons and receptors located on the mosquito’s antennae and mouth-parts that detect chemicals such as lactic acid and carbon dioxide. When applied correctly, DEET forms a vapor barrier at the skin surface that deters mosquitoes from landing on the skin.
FLIES are another irritation, especially when you want to enjoy a braai or a lazy lunch, buffet style.
I am not an advocate of the various poisonous repellents; their fumes and smells cause severe headaches, nausea, dizziness and sinus problems.
So I had to come up with an alternative solution.
The WYNNYA MOSQUITO & INSECT REPELLENT works like a charm. I have one next to my bed, in the kitchen, the TV room and another one under my desk. The latter is most important since working at night on my computer seems to be meal time for those little blood suckers.
I infused beeswax with various insect repellent essential oils, in particular Tagetes and Patchouli Essential Oil.
Tagetes Oil, also known as “Khakibos” and “Black Jacks”, is nature’s answer to repelling mosquitos, ticks and flies. A short stroll through the African Bush and your pants are covered in Black Jack needles. Next time, brush them off only when you get home, as the sticky oil of the Khakibos needles might just keep ticks and flies away from you.
“Buggar Off” is a brilliant mosquito and insect repellent comprised of incense sticks, another brilliant Wynnya creation!
They burn for about 20 minutes and the smell lingers for 3 to 4 hours to keep the mosquitos away. Place it under your outdoor table in the evening to enjoy bug-free, beautiful summer nights to the fullest!
Wynnya … “all is good in joy and harmony.”
